Secretary Duncan, who has helped to secure congressional support for expanding investment in education, is speaking at CCD鈥檚 commencement in support President Obama鈥檚 initiative to offer free community college for all.

He has also helped champion other important education initiatives, including securing increases in the Pell grant program as well as income-based repayment programs and loan forgiveness to help reduce student loan default rates and student debt.

鈥淲e believe CCD epitomizes the value proposition of the community college experience,鈥 said Dr. Everette J. Freeman, CCD's president. 鈥淲e are honored that Secretary Duncan has selected CCD and will participate in our 45th commencement.鈥

This year, CCD will award over 1,000 degrees and certificates and expects 250 students to walk in the commencement ceremony on May 14th.

CCD paralegal student and graduating senior Stacie Amaya, who will receive the Distinguished Student Award and the President鈥檚 service award, will also speak at commencement. Amaya is a member of the student government and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honors society.

鈥淐CD has meant a lot to me. I came here at such a dark time in my life and CCD was the exact thing I needed at the right time. It gave me a positive outlook on my future and turned the hope switch back on," said Amaya.

CCD鈥檚 Commencement will take place at 7:00 p.m. at University of Denver鈥檚 Magness Arena. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
